The city of Farmington, Michigan is a suburb of Detroit located in Oakland County. Farmington spans 2.66 square miles and is virtually surrounded by the city of Farmington Hills. The city is known for its historic downtown area and also features many lovely Victorian-style homes. According to CNNMoney.com in 2007 Farmington was #55 on their Best Places to Live list and in 2013 the city was ranked again on the Best places to live list, this time in 27th place. Some of the city’s appeal is based on its history and some is based on the renovations and remodeling in the downtown area which include new lighting, brick sidewalks, and beautiful landscaping as well as much needed repairs and refacing on selected buildings.

The city of Farmington sits at the site of three intersecting Native American Trails the Shiawassee Trail, the Grand River Trial and Orchard Lake Trail, these early trails made the area a hub of travel and trade. European settlers came to the area in 1824, Arthur Power was among the first to arrive and he founded the village of Farmington. The majority of early settlers to the area were Quakers and the village began life with the name Quakertown. But In1826 the budding city was named Farmington after the hometown of its founder, Farmington, New York. The city was officially incorporated in 1867 and became a home rule city in 1926. In 1976 the Farmington Historic District was added to the National Registor of Historic Places.

According to the United States Census of 2010, the bustling city of Farmington was home to 10,372 people spread over 4,624 households. This figure along with the city’s geographic size combines to give Farmington a population density of  3,899.2 people per square mile. According to the census the median household income in Farmington was  $56,442 and the median family income was  $67,407. Farmington has a council-manager style of government which includes a city council made up of four council members and a mayor who appoint a city manager to handle daily operations in the city.

The neighborhoods in Farmington have varied styles and housing is a mixed bag, though predominantly middle class in nature. The neighborhoods to the north and west of the business district you will find the oldest homes, the eastern portion of the city is also Arthur Power. The houses in the southern portion of the city are middle ground in age and are well maintained. The modern subdivisions lie in the western portion of the city.
