TL;DR
Fall and the holidays are a great time to explore Oakland County's art scene. Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills is free on Thursdays, and the Oakland University Art Gallery in Rochester is open Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., through May. Farmington Hills shows rotating exhibits at City Hall, and the Northville Art House runs shows in downtown Northville. For holiday shopping, mark Paint Creek's Holiday Art Market in Rochester (opens Nov. 13), the Royal Oak Market: Art Fair Edition (Nov. 19 and 20), and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center Holiday Shop (Dec. 3 to 19).
The best places to see art in Oakland County this fall are Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, the Oakland University Art Gallery in Rochester, the City Hall galleries in Farmington Hills, and the Northville Art House. For holiday gifts made by local artists, three markets stand out: Paint Creek Center for the Arts in Rochester, the Royal Oak Market: Art Fair Edition, and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center Holiday Shop. After 24 years selling homes in Oakland County, these are the spots I point people to when they ask what there is to do here once the weather turns.
Use these questions to compare communities and plan an art outing. Confirm current dates and hours with each venue.

Museums Worth a Dedicated Visit
Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills
Cranbrook Art Museum opens Wednesday through Sunday at 11 a.m., closing at 5 p.m. except Thursdays at 8 p.m. Admission is $12, with discounts and free admission for children 12 and under. Thursdays are free for individuals and families, but groups larger than 10 cannot be accommodated. Holiday closures include November 26 and December 24, 25 and 31, 2026, plus January 1, 2027. Check the museum’s visit page before leaving.
Oakland University Art Gallery, Rochester
The Oakland University Art Gallery sits in Wilson Hall on the OU campus, across from Meadow Brook Theatre. It presents six exhibitions each season from September through May and is open Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., with extra evening hours during Meadow Brook Theatre performances. Visitor parking is in Lot 1 off Squirrel Road. It pairs well with dinner in downtown Rochester.
Art Close to Home in Farmington Hills
Many people don't realize how much art the City of Farmington Hills puts on display. Its public art program, started in 2010, fills City Hall and The Hawk with work by dozens of artists from Farmington Hills and nearby communities, and most of the pieces are for sale, with the money going directly to the artists. The collections can be seen Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
City Hall also hosts a rotating gallery near Council Chambers. The city’s exhibit calendar lists Kathleen Boettcher’s acrylic paintings through November 6, 2026, and David Korelitz as the next featured artist. Confirm the upcoming show’s schedule directly with Cultural Arts at 248-699-6709. Other city exhibition spaces include the Heritage Park Nature Center and the Farmington Arts Foundation gallery in the Costick Center; check each location’s access hours.
If art and a strong sense of community matter to you, Farmington Hills offers a lot of both at a wide range of price points. I break down what homes are selling for across the city in my Farmington Hills home prices by ZIP code guide.
Galleries in Northville and West Bloomfield

Community galleries like the Northville Art House host free opening receptions. Illustration.
Northville Art House
The Northville Art House’s 2026 Off-Center exhibition at 215 W. Cady Street runs October 2–31 and presents 84 works by 72 artists. Fall gallery hours are Tuesday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Friday–Saturday, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.; it is closed Sunday and Monday. For visits after October 31, check the current exhibition calendar. Art Leaders Gallery, West Bloomfield

Holiday Art Markets to Put on Your Calendar
Holiday art markets are the best way to find one-of-a-kind gifts and meet the artists who made them. These three are my top picks this season:
| Dates (2026) | Market | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Opens Nov. 13 | Paint Creek Center for the Arts Holiday Art Market | 407 Pine St., Rochester |
| Nov. 19–20 | Royal Oak Market: Art Fair Edition | Royal Oak Farmers Market, 316 E. 11 Mile Rd. |
| Dec. 3–19 | Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center Holiday Shop | 1516 S. Cranbrook Rd., Birmingham |
Dates from each organizer as of October 2026. Confirm hours before you go.
Paint Creek Center for the Arts, Rochester
Paint Creek’s Holiday Art Market brings together about 50 local artists and close to 2,000 handmade items, from paintings and photography to jewelry and pottery. The free opening reception is Friday, November 13, from 5 to 8 p.m., alongside the center's Student and Faculty Exhibition.
Royal Oak Market: Art Fair Edition
Run by The Guild of Artists and Artisans, this indoor fair features 60 jury-selected artists at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. It runs Thursday and Friday, November 19 and 20, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Because it's indoors, the weather won't spoil your plans. Details are on The Guild website.
Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center Holiday Shop
The BBAC Holiday Shop fills more than 3,000 square feet of gallery space with work from over 200 juried artists. Expect jewelry, ceramics, scarves, prints, paintings, ornaments, and toys. It's open December 3 through 19, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
Pro Tip
Plan your Cranbrook visit for a Thursday. Admission is free and the museum stays open until 8 p.m., so you can go after work. Just note that the free Thursday policy doesn't cover groups larger than 10.
Sample Fall Weekend
Thursday evening, visit Cranbrook and have dinner in Birmingham. On Friday afternoon, visit the Farmington Hills City Hall gallery during weekday business hours. Saturday, explore downtown Northville and the Art House before its 3 p.m. closing. Sunday afternoon, visit the Oakland University Art Gallery and downtown Rochester.
This is an illustrative plan, subject to exhibition changes and holiday closures. City Hall’s regular gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Check each venue before traveling.

Galleries, art centers, and holiday markets tend to grow where downtowns are already walkable and busy. That's why the same names keep showing up in this guide: Birmingham, Royal Oak, Rochester, Northville, and downtown Farmington. For many buyers, being a short walk or drive from that kind of activity is part of what they're paying for.
Arts amenities can shape personal preferences, but proximity to a gallery does not establish a home’s value or protect it from market declines. Compare recent property sales, condition and location when evaluating prices. My Oakland County home values guide is a starting point for that discussion.
Tom's Honest Take
You don't need to be an art collector to enjoy any of this. Some of the best things to do in Oakland County cost nothing, like a free Thursday at Cranbrook or a walk through the City Hall gallery in Farmington Hills.
When you're deciding where to live, spend a weekend doing what you'd actually do on a normal Saturday. Visit the galleries, eat downtown, and see how the place feels. It tells you more about a community than any listing ever will.
