Lathrup Village began as spill over growth from a development called Lathrup Townsite. The city of Lathrup Village was officially incorporated in 1953 and was the first incorporated community in the township of Southfield. As off 1998 much of the city was included in the Lathrup Village Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic district includes over 1,000 properties that are primarily residential in nature.
